Introductory Modern Workshops with Ellen Bartel
Modern 101-A: An Introduction to Dance (Jan 28-Mar 3, $65)
This class will be structured for students to learn and progress. It is for the very beginner modern dance student, suited for first time adult dancers. The goals for the first 6-week session are:
- Dancer’s alignment, placement of spine-centering
- Placement of dance positions for feet, legs and arms
- Increase flexibility and strength
- Traditional technique
- Basic dance combination and gestures
- Memorization skills
We will attain the above goals through simple and fun exercises designed to help the student understand how the body moves as a dancer.
Modern 101-B: An Introduction to Dance. (Mar 17-Apr 14, $65)
This class is the follow-up to Modern 101-A. It will still be structured as an introduction to modern dance, but we will continue to study and work on exercises that extend our goals from the previous class. The goals for the second 6-week session are:
- Applying technique to dance combinations
- More complex dance combinations
- Increase flexibility and strength
- Traditional technique slightly more advanced
- Turns (yikes!)
We ask for 6 or more students for the workshops to make and will be closed to new students after the first class. Discussion and tailoring class format to meet the needs of the students is a priority for the success of the class. Students do not have to take 101-A to attend 101-B, however it is recommended.
